Prolozone Therapy

Prolozone® Therapy is a homeopathic/oxygen-ozone injection technique developed and pioneered by Dr. Frank Shallenberger. It is excellent for all forms of musculo-skeletal and joint pain including chronic neck and back pain, rotator cuff injuries, degenerative and arthritic hips and knees, degenerated discs, and shoulder and elbow pain. Because in many cases Prolozone actually corrects the pathology of the disorder, there is a 75% chance for the chronic pain sufferer to becoming permanently pain free (from the American Academy of Ozonotherapy).

The reason that some injuries completely heal and others don’t has to do with circulation and healing voltage/energy. In order for a damaged area of the body to regenerate and heal, it must have vitamins, minerals, and other co-factors needed for repair including oxygen, circulation, and often times a signal to heal. Of these, by far the most important is oxygen. Low levels of oxygen cause an accumulation of lactic acid, which is what causes pain. Prolozone Therapy™ works in the following way: first, anti-inflammatory homeopathic medications are injected into the injured joint/soft tissue to reduce inflammation and swelling. This leads to increased circulation. At the same time the area is also treated with vitamins and minerals that are critical for healing. Following this, the area is infiltrated with oxygen in the form of ozone.

The result is that the tissues/joints get what is required for healing, and circulation to the area is re-established which frequently results in a permanent solution to chronic pain.

Prolozone Therapy™ involves the injection of ozone in and around ligaments where they attach to the bone. The injected ozone increases the blood supply and flow of healing nutrients. More importantly, it also stimulates the deposition and activity of fibroblasts and chondroblasts. These cells synthesize the collagen and cartilage that the body uses to repair damaged ligaments and joints. This increase in cellular repair activity strengthens and tightens the injured tissues; thereby stabilizing the area, and removing the cause of the pain. Prolozone therapy™ is NOT the same as Prolotherapy as Prolozone uses oxygen to create a healing response, whereas Prolotherapy uses inflammation to create healing and can be very painful. Pain during Prolozone Therapy™ is very rare.

Why Is Ozone Used?

Ozone is a naturally-occurring, highly reactive molecule consisting of three atoms of oxygen. Because ozone is so reactive, it is able to stimulate fibroblastic and chondroblastic activity to an almost unbelievable extent. This high level of reactivity, combined with the innate safety of oxygen, makes ozone the ideal therapeutic molecule.

What Conditions Are Treated?

Osteoarthritis of the knees, hips, and spine, shoulder pain from rotator cuff injuries or trigger points, and neck pain are the most common ailments treated with Prolozone Therapy™. It is also excellent for many other types of musculoskeletal pain, including virtually any sports injuries, fibromyalgia, plantar fasciitis, and tennis elbow. It can be especially effective in treating areas that have previously been operated on because of the significant scarring and injury that occurs to ligaments during surgery.

What Can I Expect?

At your initial visit, you will undergo a brief physical exam and answer questions regarding what is causing you pain. You will then have the area(s) cleansed thoroughly before having the Prolozone Therapy™ injection(s). Please wear loose, and comfortable clothing that provides easy access to the areas needing treatment. All Prolozone Therapy appointments are with Joanna Hutchins, PA-C, MPAS. The response to treatment varies from patient to patient, and depends on one’s healing ability and level of injury. Some people may only need one or two treatments, while others may need as many as six or seven. The injection process is repeated every 2 weeks until maximum improvement is noted. Prolozone Therapy™ typically results in a complete absence of symptoms, even in severe pain conditions that have been present for years. And, the most amazing thing about it is that the results usually represent a permanent fix.
